In 1870, the natural scientist Anton Dohrn, a follower of Darwin, was entrusted a plot within the Villa Communale on which to build a Zoological park. The Zoological park is an important research centre for marine animal and plant life and holds the oldest aquarium in Europe, where hundres of species found in the bay of Naples can be observed. There is also a sizeable technical library and research laboratories.
